Tips For Your Bridal Session

May 21, 2014

Tip 1: Bring someone along who can make you smile or laugh.  If your mom lives close she will probably want to come and see her baby girl in her wedding dress and looking gorgeous.  However, if your mother is the nagging sort, or you don’t have a good relationship with her, or if she just straight up annoys you, then you should just invite a friend, sister, or someone else.  No, mom doesn’t need to be made to feel excluded, but if it is going to make you annoyed the whole time, then bring along someone that can make you joyful instead.  Photos turn out much better when a beautiful bride looks joyful and true emotion shines through rather than being annoyed and having to fake or force smiles.  Katie Davis (Stover now) had both her mother and a friend come and it was awesome.  Katie’s mom, Regina kept bringing ideas to the table, which I love and her friend Mara was able to make Katie laugh and bring out the joy.

Tip 2: Be flexible.  For this particular bridal session we were going to photograph the session at the Botanical Gardens which looks lovely at certain times of the year.  I went about an hour early the day of the session to scout it out and nothing had really bloomed.  I thought that at least the amazing cabin could salvage things, but when I got there, people had done graffiti all over the cabin walls (BHHHHOOOOO).  I called Katie about 30 minutes before the session and asked her if she was cool with changing the location.  She agreed and we changed locations last minute.  Katie was super laid back and it made the photos turn out much better.  Which brings me to my final point…

Tip 3: Trust your photographer.  If you do not trust your photographer, then you probably should not have hired them in the first place.  Take a look at various photographers and see what draws you to a particular one.  Is it their style, the mood they capture, or something unexplainable that you just have to have?  Whatever reason you decide to go with a photographer make sure that you give them some trust.  Katie trusted my judgement in switching locations at the last minute and the back up location ended up being way more interesting than the primary original location.

Tip 4: HAVE FUN!!  You are getting married!! Don’t forget to let loose and have some fun.  Show a little sass with that bouquet.  Let your personality come out.  Enjoy being beautiful and being all dressed up.  Reflect on the fact that the next time you strap this whole getup on, you will be marrying your amazing partner.

Extra Tip at no extra cost: Allow plenty of time to get your hair and makeup done in order to be to your session on time.  The sun does not slow down for anyone’s schedule and if you are late then things tend to get rushed, you may not get as many shots, and you yourself may feel flustered.  But don’t worry, just remember Tip 4: HAVE FUN!!
